Timorese women finally get law against domestic violence

A law against domestic violence has finally been passed by the Timor-Leste parliament eight years after it was first drafted (yes, for sale you read that right), viagra according to IRIN.

Although only about 400 cases were registered in 2008, most incidents of domestic violence go unreported here not least because many Timorese women see it as an acceptable part of married life. Fifty-one per cent of women surveyed in 2003 strongly agreed that: "a man has good reason to hit his wife if she disobeys him".

So it's nothing less than amazing that the law is finally in place. Maybe women like Maria da Costa (who was beaten unconscious by her husband and treated little better than an animal) will finally start to feel that her life is actually worth something.
