Australia bans models that are too skinny

The New Zealand Herald today reports that Australia has opted for a code of conduct which will ban models that are too skinny.

In an attempt to raise self esteem for young Australians, the Australian Federal Youth Minister, Kate Ellis has set up this initiative. She hopes the code will discourage fashion magazines from using weight loss and cosmetic surgery related advertisements in a hope that young people will have a more accurate and positive outlook on body image.

Ms Ellis said people "no longer want to see already thin models who have great chunks
digitally removed and cut out of their thighs and waists to appear even
thinner" and she hopes this code will have an impact on the fashion and beauty industry.

It seems like the idea is catching on as Paula Bennett, the New Zealand Minister of Youth Affairs is also looking into it.

Maybe our government could take note.
