HIV-positive bride-to-be cannot tell anyone about her status

Womense-news has a disturbing story today about a young Kenyan woman who became HIV positive through having anal sex with her boyfriend. 

That would be bad enough but Sophia (not her real name) cannot tell anyone about her status – not her family and not even her friends – because she is not married and premarital sex goes against her Muslim culture. 

Worse still, she is betrothed to a Muslim man from another country whom she has never met and whom she is due to marry this September. 

Sophia worries about infecting her future husband, but for the time being is more concerned that her family will not be embarrassed on her wedding night – her virginity will be proved when the bloody sheet from the bridal bed is produced like a trophy for all to see.
