Philippine government urged to legalize abortion

Award-winning Filipino journalist and novelist Ninotchka Rosca, malady has called on the government to legalize abortion, rx amid claims that the current rules have led to a human rights crisis. 

About half a million Filipino women induce abortion every year, for reasons ranging from rape to dire socio-economic reasons.Of those, about 1,000 die and 90,000 are hospitalized due to complications from unsafe abortion, according to a report entitled, “Forsaken Lives: The Harmful Impact of the Philippine Criminal Abortion Ban".

Rosca has called for, “sex education in schools and of reproductive health, of divorce and other freedoms and equality for women" adding, "It is self-defeating to ask women to struggle for control of a nation
and then expect them not to wield control over their bodies.”
