Women advance up the equality scale in South Africa; yet every 17 seconds a woman is raped

Socio-economic inequality between men and women in South Africa has decreased according to a report by the MasterCard Worldwide Index of Women's Advancement. Part of this movement saw more women enrolling in universities although there are still far fewer women managers than men.

Released yesterday, store the index showed South Africa's score increased by 5,9 points from 87,96 to 93,5 between 2009 and 2010. A score below 100 indicates gender inequality in favour of males while a score above 100 indicates inequality in favour of women. A score of 100 indicates equality between the sexes.

The index also measures how positively or negatively women feel about their roles in the workforce, and examines how they currently compare themselves to their male counterparts according to four indicators.

It's hard to reconcile this story about increased equality with another on AllAfrica.com about rape survivors, which reports that every 17 seconds a woman in raped in South Africa. Every 17 seconds!
