‘Potential victims of human trafficking’ rescued in Belfast

As part of the UK-wide Opertation Apsis, police carried out a number of raids in 16 properties, including 7 suspected brothels in Belfast. In all 15 people were rescued – 12 women and 3 men, and 4 people were arrested, according to the BBC.

Detective Chief Superintendent Roy McComb, head of the PSNI Organised Crime Branch, commented: “Human trafficking and prostitution is no longer gender specific. Men and women are being tricked or forced into prostitution in major towns and cities.” However, as the figures show, trafficking victims still tend to be mostly women.

The UK-wide operation is a good step to tackle this modern day slavery.
