Ivory Coast’s all-women traffic police

The BBC website has a great photo feature today from the Ivory Coast of their all-female traffic police unit.

Traditionalists have long claimed that women shouldn’t be allowed to work as police officers, and the unit was set up around a year ago partly to specifically challenge these prejudices.

The women do feel a lack of respect from drivers – both for the police generally and for women in particular. One woman tells of being hit from behind by a taxi whilst trying to direct traffic.
