New study reveals more than twice as many men in family films as women
The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media (GDIGM) has produced a new study flagging up a dire lack of female characters in family films.
The snappily-titled “Gender Disparity On Screen and Behind the Camera in Family Films” examined 122 top-grossing domestic family films, and found that of the 5,554 speaking characters studied, 71% were male and only 29% female.
In other words, a ratio of almost 2.5 males for every one female, which has not changed significantly in 20 years.
