Hooters for kids?

Hooters is in trouble with the National Organization for Women (NOW) in California.

The chain of restaurants is incurring the wrath of NOW, not for its exploitation of scantily scad waitresses, but for catering to children.

The restaurants in San Francisco, San Bruno, Orange County  and Sacramento are classified as ‘adult entertainment’ establishments but also serve minors, NOW’s California chapter said in papers filed with police and prosecutors.

In recent years, Hooters has promoted itself as family-friendly. According to their website, hooters.com, ‘10% of the parties we serve have children in them’.

Hooters provides child menus, high chairs and booster seats, and  – most worrying of all – sells  T-shirts in children’s sizes that identify the wearer as a ‘Future Hooters Girl’.

Patricia Bellasalma, NOW’s California president, asserted that Hooters is violating state and local laws prohibiting sexually oriented “adult” businesses from serving minors. The chain is also violating federal employment standards, she said.

  1. About time too. I was watching a series of interviews on Youtube the other day at the Cardiff opening of hooters and one woman was saying how she felt it was the only restuarant she could bring her children too because no one minds how much noise they make etc etc. If I’m not mistaken, pizza hut doesn’t have noise rules does it?! What about Frankie and Benny’s? It’s simply not appropriate to take your kids to hooters. They defend themselves saying that the women are normal waitresses – this wasn’t what I saw when I walked past the window and saw part of a training day with about thirty scantily clad ‘waitresses’ learning to hoola hoop! And they also claim they don’t objectifiy women, yet have semi pornographic calendars for sale (which shey show in the window).
