Thousands of rape kits left untested

Summary of story from Texas Tribune, 28.01.11

Tens of thousands of rape kits – from as far back as the 1980s – have been left untested in Texas police departments as a result of budget deficits and lack of resources.

Officials say they are working to reduce the backlog but Sgt. Elizabeth Donegan, who runs Austin police department’s sex crimes unit, said that testing all of the kits was “not reasonable” and “not an effective use of [investigators’] time”.

If processed, the biological material contained within the kits could be used to create a DNA database that could help catch rapists, as well as identifying those who have been wrongly convicted.
