United Arab Emirates to try schoolgirl for adultery

Summary of story from News 24, April 15, 2011

A 14 year-old Arab schoolgirl has been imprisoned on a charge of adultery in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and will appear in court later this month.

On April 5, Gulf News reported that police arrested the teenager after she met up with her 25 year-old boyfriend on the roof of her family home in Ajman.

She has since been forced to undergo a gynaecological examination, which her father said “confirmed she was still a virgin”.

The English-language daily that reported the story quoted a ‘law expert’, who said the law states that the minimum age of suspects in crimes related to sex must be 15 years.

The law expert also said that “Such cases should be conducted in special juvenile courts. Otherwise, suspects are considered victims rather than suspects.”

But it seems the trial of this girl will go ahead despite her age.

The, so far unnamed, girl has been detained since March 22.

She was held a jail for adult women for two weeks. She was also held in solitary confinement for three days before Gulf News reported on the situation. She was then transferred to a juvenile centre.
