A feminist blogger has criticised recently-disgraced newspaper magnate Rupert Murdoch for backing a media empire which insults and belittles women.

According to Flavia Dzodan, writing for the feminist blog Tiger Beatdown, the former News of the World owner is to blame for a stream of woes, including ‘not being able to access an abortion provider’ and ‘the increase of intolerance and xenophobia sweeping the entirety of the Western World.’

She goes on to list examples of offensive articles published by Murdoch-endorsed media outlets like AskMen.com, Fox News and HarperCollins publishing house.

These include an article suggesting that women should “be shamed” into losing weight and a news broadcast which apparently demonises immigrant women.

According to Dzodan, ‘Since 9/11, the steady radicalization of international politics, the attack on progressive ideas, the constant portrayal of LGBTQ issues as a threat, the raise of the extreme Christian right and the increasing rhetoric of war and hatred have gone hand in hand with an ideology pushed by media outlets owned by Rupert Murdoch.’

The News of the World recently became embroiled in a phone-hacking scandal which led to Britain’s most popular tabloid newspaper being closed after 168 years of publication, and the withdrawal of the media mogul’s bid for control of a broadcasting station, BSkyB.
