Gender perspective integration is essential, says UN report

Summary of story from UN News Centre, October 21, 2011

In a report to the United Nations General Assembly, Gabriela Knaul, the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, said that countries need to reassess how women are represented and treated in the criminal justice system.

Knaul pointed out that integrating a gender outlook is a fundamental step towards allowing equal access to justice for men and women.

Furthermore, given the historical and pervasive discrimination against women throughout the world, she stressed that “we all have an essential responsibility to integrate a gender perspective into our own mandates and work.”

She also expressed particular concern for the lack of integration and women’s points of view into judicial procedures, noting that women’s representation should be encouraged.

Knaul added that she hoped that her report will “encourage stakeholders to properly study, understand, assess, and challenge the impacts and effects that gender-based stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination have on both women and men in their access to and engagement in the justice system as a whole, and the criminal justice system in particular.”

They’ve been studying this for 40 years now and the judiciary’s attitude has deteriorated rather than improved in my own experience. Not sure how we change the attitude of men too defensive to study themselves and change their own attitude.
