Bahrain police have released Zainab al-Khawaja, a blogger and human rights activist, after five days in custody after an anti-government demonstration (see WVoN story).

Ms Khawaja, daughter of a jailed opposition leader, attracted global attention to the situation in Bahrain after images of her arrest, in which she was dragged along the ground to a police vehicle, received widespread coverage.

After her release, the 28-year-old mother tweeted that the last few days had been “tough”.

She was released pending trial.

Inspired by the Arab Spring, one part of Bahrain’s revolution took place between February and March. The government crackdown left at least 24 people dead, though some accounts put the toll as high as 40.

An inquiry by an international panel of human rights experts found police had used excessive force.
