Who is Alison Clarke? Hmm, good question. Well, I’m a woman and a feminist. I’m also a freelance journalist, but I’ve had a bit of an erratic past having been (in no particular order) a secretary, nurse, trade union official and solicitor. And those were just the main careers. I’ve had hundreds of other jobs as well.
So I have a wide spread of interest, but for the last eight or nine years I’ve managed to stick to writing more or less full time. I’ve written for the Guardian, the Times and the Independent, but also for a range of other specialist magazines such as the Nursing Times, the Lawyer and the Law Society Gazette.
And when it was going, I wrote for Everywoman and its successor, Sibyl, both feminist magazines that are, unfortunately, long defunct.
I am currently the editor of a weekly, online employment law journal aimed at trade union officials, as well as the editor of a monthly, online employment law newsletter for over 10,000 human resource managers.
From 2000 to 2004, I was the speechwriter for the Women and Equality Unit and wrote speeches, articles and publications on behalf of six different Women’s Ministers, including two at cabinet level.
I have also written five books: ‘Community Nurses and the Law’ published by the MSF union in 1999; ‘Women’s Rights At Work’ published by Pluto Press in 2001; ‘Maternity Pay and leave – a guide for employers’, self-published in November 2004; ‘A Guide to Equality Law’ published by the TUC in January 2005; and ‘A Guide to Managing Pregnancy at Work’, published by Personnel Today in May 2005.
