Women’s Views on News

Women’s Views On News (WVoN) is a unique, non-profit, online daily women’s news service set up in January 2010 to redress the very real bias towards men in the news.

Our long term goal to achieving our vision – building a world where all women’s voices and experiences are heard by all – is to become an internationally renowned, one stop shop for women’s news.

Our visitors

Launched in January 2010, we already receive over 40,000 visits each month equating to just under 70,000 pageviews.

We are growing rapidly, with 75% of visits from first time new visitors – about 45% are from the UK, with almost a third from the US and 14% from the rest of Europe.

We have a niche readership of politically and socially aware women (92% of our readers are female) whose ages range from 26 to 60, with a relatively even spread across age groups. About 45% live in the UK, almost a third in the US and 14% are from the rest of Europe.

Of those, 94% would recommend WVoN to someone. We also know from our 6000 twitter followers that our visitors are engaged, well educated women who are very computer-literate.

Over a third of our traffic comes through natural search on Google; 20% comes through our social media accounts (on Twitter and Facebook).

For advertisers

We offer a great opportunity to be really noticed by our audience.  We take only a small number of advertisers on our site, to ensure that visitors don’t feel bombarded, and to ensure that you get noticed.  In return for a sponsorship fee of £75 per month you would receive;

10,000 impressions per month, including visibility on our home page

A thank you mention as a sponsor tweeted to our supporters each month

A sponsor’s profile on our site, including your logo, a link to your site and 100 words

The opportunity (if you wish) to include a special promotion for a one-off fee of £250

BACKGROUND

Why women?

In 2010, the Global Media Monitoring Project (the world’s largest and longest longitudinal study on gender and media) published a report which found that only 16 per cent of all global news stories were specifically about women and only 25 per cent of people seen, heard or read about in the news worldwide were women.

News media is not only the most dominant, but also the most influential source of information and opinion about the world around us. Given the research by the GMMP, it’s clear that literally thousands of stories about, by and for women were not being told, sending a message that women’s experiences and opinions are just not as important or valid as those of men.

What do we cover?

The site provides up to date news on all the major national and international stories of the day, in much the same way as any newspaper or online news service, but the stories are always about women. It also includes feature articles and opinion pieces from time to time, but the focus is on news.

We source our stories from press releases, established national and international newspapers and agencies, international women’s campaign organisations, and occasionally other bloggers and writers.

We give precedence to stories that are ignored or sidelined by the mainstream international press, for example, stories from the United Nations, Asylum Aid, and Women for Afghan Women.

Our content

A collective of 55 plus journalists, we post between 25 and 35 stories per day onto the site six days a week (Monday to Saturday).

As with many projects dedicated to social justice for women, our site is sustained by the dedication and enthusiasm of the women (and men) who run it, giving up their time to ensure that there’s at least one site in the world where women’s stories will be told without bias and without judgement.

Our site – the only one of its kind – challenges the male orthodoxy of most news sites and demonstrates that there is more than one way to view the news.

Women see and experience the world differently to men and our site makes sure that their story is not just told, but is also heard.
