Dark chocolate busts stress

An Indian researcher has conducted a study that suggests dark chocolate is an effective  stress-buster.

The study, by Sunil Kochhar and his team, was published online in the ACS’s Journal of Proteome Research. It claims that 40g of dark chocolate every day for a fortnight reduces the levels of stress hormones in the body.

The study also noted that chocolate also went some way towards correcting other stress-related biochemical imbalances.

Dr Kochhar and his team focused specifically on antioxidants and other beneficial substances in dark chocolate. These substances also reduce risk factors for heart disease and ailments.

The scientists identified reductions in stress hormones and other stress-related biochemical changes in volunteers who rated themselves as highly stressed. The volunteers were then given dark chocolate to eat for two weeks.

The researchers claimed that the ‘study provides strong evidence that a daily consumption of 40 grams during a period of two weeks is sufficient to modify the metabolism of healthy human volunteers.’

On so many levels, this is good news for all us chocoholics!
