Australia’s Sally Pearson has been named Female World Athlete of the year for 2011.

The award, to be given at the World Athletics Gala in Monaco tonight, will be presented by Prince Albert of Monaco as well as Lamine Diack, president of the International Association of Athletics Federations.

Pearson, 25, has had an amazing year, winning ten of her eleven 100m hurdles races, including clocking 12.28 seconds to win the World Championship title.  She became the fourth fastest woman in history with this run and in total produced seven of the season’s quickest eleven performances.

“To be able to win this for my country and for my region, Oceania, means a lot and hopefully will inspire junior athletes to stay in athletics,” she said.
