Christian “guys” in the US think it’s immodest for girls to arch their backs
We wouldn't normally feature this story on WVON as it doesn't really come under the heading of "news" but it's so interesting that we decided not to deprive our readers.
A website called Sociological Images were recently sent the results of a Modesty Survey which, as they said, were "downright fascinating".
The survey in question dates back to January 2007 (hence the initial warning about its lack of news worthiness) and captured the views of hundreds of Christian girls, along with over 1600 "Christian guys". The questions were submitted by the girls who wanted to know the views of the "guys" about modesty.
Let me just give you a flavour of the results.
The "guys" (sorry, have to keep calling them that because that's the label given in the survey data) defined "immodesty" as "something immodest [that] draws attention to a girl's body". That included halter tops, miniskirts, decorative stitching and designs on the back pocket of jeans, skirts or dresses with chest pockets that draw too much attention to the bust; a purse with the strap diagonally across the chest ( as it draws too much attention to the bust).
But immodesty isn't just about the way a girl dresses, it also includes the way she walks. So if she bends over with her backside towards you, if she stretches (for instance by arching her back) or if her chest bounces when she is walking or running, those would count as "stumbling blocks" for the "guys."
Even a technically modest outfit can be problematic when it has attached sexual connotations, such as a school girl outfit.
I could go on, but you get the drift. Perhaps they'd like us just to cover up completely from head to toe and stay indoors so that they're not confronted with any more "stumbling blocks". Oh, but someone else already thought that one up.
Thanks to Asiya Islam for this story.
