Indian paramilitary forces in the central state of Chhattisgarh are alleged to have tortured villagers whilst pursuing Maoist rebels. An internal enquiry within the Border Security Force (BSF) will look into claims that troops beat and gave electric shocks to tribal people, including women, during interrogation.

Chhattisgarh is a stronghold of Maoist insurgents whilst at the same time being a base for a large number of Indian police and paramilitary troops.

Maoist rebels claim they are fighting for the rights of the rural poor and have admitted responsibility for a number of deadly attacks in recent months, including the killing of 76 members of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force .

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the insurgency as India’s biggest internal security challenge.
