Linda Norgrove Foundation will help educate Afghan women
The funeral is taking place today of Linda Norgrove, the charity worker who was taken hostage in Afghanistan, and killed during an attempt to rescue her. A humanist ceremony is being held at Uig Community Centre.
The Stornoway Gazette reports that Linda’s family is now setting up a charitable foundation in her memory, and have asked for donations in lieu of flowers.
The foundation is to help fund female and family-orientated schemes such as children’s orphanages, specific girls’ schools and scholarships for Afghan women to attend universities.
Linda died from fragment wounds after a grenade went off during an attempt by American forces to rescue her. American officials have admitted that the grenade could have been triggered by one of their soldiers.
