Two murdered women barely mentioned in news story


The Sydney Morning Herald reports today on a high-ranking commander’s sexual depravity, which culminated in the murder of two women and his subsequent imprisonment.

The story, written by two male journalists, focuses almost exclusively on the story of Canadian killer and details of his murder victims are limited to a reference ‘the first victim’ about half way down the page and then a mention of the second victim – Marie-France Comeau – near the end of the story.

Am I the only one who finds this emphasis disturbing?

  1. I am doing a lecture about this very topic next week (the newsworthiness and sensationalism of crime reporting). If the victims are not interesting, or of ‘news value, they’ll be largely ignored.
