Chemical industry lobbyists spend millions to keep harmful BPA in baby bottles

Lobbyists for the American Chemistry Council have spent millions of dollars to stop legislation which would have banned a harmful chemical – Bisphenol A (BPA) – from infant formula and baby bottles, Senator Dianne Feinstein reports on today’s Huffington Post.

She had worked for the last seven months to craft an amendment to the Food Safety Modernization Act which would ban BPA from infant formula and baby bottles. And on Tuesday night, she thought she had a bipartisan agreement.

But at the last minute, Republicans bowed to pressure from the chemical industry, as a result of which BPA-laden baby bottles will remain on the shelves of American stores as a “safe” product.

She says she’s not giving up and asks American consumers to support companies that are phasing out BPA or are searching for alternatives.
