Nude photo on Facebook leads to jail sentence for ex-boyfriend

A 20 year-old man from Wellington, New Zealand, has received a four month jail sentence after posting a naked photo of his ex-girlfriend on Facebook.

Joshua Simon Ashby pleaded guilty to six counts of threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend via text message, one count of theft, for stealing her clothes and cutting them up, as well as a charge of distributing indecent matter in relation to posting the photo.

Ashby’s ex-girlfriend was reported to feel embarrassed, exposed and ridiculed following his actions.

It will be interesting to see how our social media usage alters criminal charges and proceedings in future, especially with regard to privacy and ownership.
