Five of the women in Grim Sleeper photos identified

Following on from earlier WVoN reports, ambulance  police have tentatively identified five of the 180 women whose photos were published as part of a bid to find possible victims of one of the worst serial killer suspects in recent US history.

Photos of the women had been found in the possession of Lonnie David Franklin Jr, a suspected killer known as the Grim Sleeper, who is currently charged with the murder of 10 women.

The police found more than 1,000 photos and hundreds of hours of video at his home that showed the images of 160 women, many of them partially or fully naked and striking sexual poses, or appearing to be unconscious.

Official websites featuring the photos received more than 8 million hits within hours of the publication Thursday, and police have tentatively identified at least five of the women: allegedly three or four identified themselves by calling a police tipline.

Having looked at the photos myself, I was struck by how ordinary most of the photos seemed – just snaps of happy smiling women.

This only underlines how tragic this story is, not least because he got away with it for so long.  Is the social construction of masculinity so skewed that a killer can operate within our midst with impunity?
