GWU to follow Ivy League schools in offering gender neutral housing

George Washington University, in Washington, D.C., has become the latest institution to offer gender-neutral housing to its students, reports Brain Track.

The university will offer the option in nearly every residence hall beginning next fall, allowing male and female students to share either the same room or an adjacent room within a suite.

The new policy was pushed by gay, bisexual and transgender students who argued that some people may be more comfortable living with a roommate of the opposite sex.

“Ivy League schools have it. A lot of progressive schools have it. It was time for us to try it,” said Michael R. Komo, a GWU student and president of the group Allied in Pride.

According to a university press release, the option will be voluntary, and students who choose to have a randomly assigned roommate will still be matched with someone of the same sex.

“It is our hope that this pilot program will broaden students’ choices and help ensure living arrangements that are welcoming and inclusive for all members of our community,” said Dean of Columbia College, Michele Moody-Adams, and Dean of the Fu Foundation of Engineering and Applied Science Feniosky, Pena-Mora.
