Women’s centre hostages freed

An armed man who took two employees of a women’s centre hostage in eastern France surrendered to police today after a three and a half hour standoff, ynet news reports.

No one was injured.

The 21-year-old man stormed the women’s centre, that houses women in need, in the city of Mulhouse.

Armed with a gun, in the late morning, the man demanded to speak to his former companion who was living there.

When centre officials denied his demand, the man took two employees hostage, one male and one female.

A special police intervention team was called in from the nearby city of Strasbourg.

The hostage-taking comes a day after a 17-year-old armed with two knives held a class of pre-schoolers hostage in Besancon, another city in eastern France.

All were freed without injury some four hours later.
