A strange idea about ‘banter’: just stop it

Summary of an article by Claire Black in The Scotsman 30.01.11

After last week, men having a lark, letting off a bit of steam, verbally abusing women without a moment of hesitation is what we call “banter”, isn’t it?

But if sentiments such as those expressed by UK Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys (the spectacularly vulgar “hanging out the back of it”, “it” being a woman) are pub chat, then they should be challenged (see WVoN story).

It can be tricky.

Answer back and sometimes worse follows.

Refuse to laugh and the “humourless feminist” card will be played.

But, as Claire Black points out, surely what would be better is if men would just stop it. Just stop it.
