British High Court asked to relax abortion laws

Summary of story from The Press Association 28.01.11

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), the UK’s largest abortion provider, is in court requesting that the High Court relax the laws and make it easier for women to complete an abortion at home.

BPAS urged judges to rule that the 1967 Abortion Act allows women to take the second pill for an early medical abortion without having to visit a medical site.

Currently both doses must be taken under supervision in either a medical clinic or hospital, though most women go home immediately after the second dose (see WVoN story).

The UK should follow the lead of countries such as France, Sweden, and the US, which allow the completion of terminations at home, BPAS says.

It wants the court to rule against Health Secretary Andrew Lansley who has said women are required by law to take both doses at a clinic.

Pro-life advocates fear that BPAS is seeking to turn abortion into “little more than a pill-popping exercise.”
