Interview with author Amy Chua – ‘Tiger Mother’ 15 women jailed in Somalia for being ‘under-dressed’
Divorce tax will hit poorest women the hardest
Summary from The New Statesman 17 January 2011
The new ‘divorce tax’ proposed by the coalition government will hit low-earning women the hardest, argues columnist Laurie Penny.
The government is planning to charge separating couples to use the Child Support Agency.
Penny comments that the real reason ministers want to reward marriage in the tax system is to save money.
This charge, along with tax credit and housing benefit cuts, could force women to stay in an unhappy relationship for financial reasons – so a roof is kept over their children’s heads.
Another example, well articulated by Penny, of where there is one rule for the rich, there is another for the poor.
