Rev censured by church over same sex ceremonies

Three times in her career as a church minister, Jane Adams Spahr has faced censure – for officiating at same sex ceremonies.

The 68-year-old grandmother is a lesbian and refuses to leave the Presbyterian church she loves.

In the first trial before the church, the prosecutor likened her to an “addictive gambler”,  “confirmed bank robber” and a  “habitual child abuser”.

But for all her run-ins, the retired reverend stands by her ministry. She tells the Los Angeles Times: “I’ve seen what faith communities have done to some of my brothers and sisters who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender.

“We get them after they have been told they are terrible and awful and going to hell…. It is up to us in our ministries to be part of the healing.”
