Women plumbers a runaway success

Summary of story from BBC, 27.1.11.

A female-only plumbing company in Northamptonshire, East Midlands, has doubled its clientele in five years.

Pink Lady Plumbing said female customers prefer a woman working in their homes rather than a man.

Manager Clare King said:  “They seem to feel a lot more comfortable with a woman.”

King started the business as she felt there was a gap in the market for female plumbers.

“Some women live alone and can feel vulnerable when male workers carry out jobs in their home,” she said.  “It isn’t often you find female only plumbing companies, so I knew that there was a need for one.”

As the business grew, King began to train other women to become part of the company.

“It was such a success that I had to get other people involved. Now they are studying and gaining their qualifications whilst working for my company,” she said.

King hopes that she can inspire more women to own their own businesses.

“It is empowering for a women to run your own business and I want to help others feel they can do it too.”
