Women who lunch illegally

Summary of post by Harriet Sherwood in The Guardian, January 18 2011

To a casual onlooker it may have looked like a regular gathering of friends, a group of mothers and children enjoying a day out together.

But this was a mixed group of Palestinian women and Israeli women both defying the law to build links together.

The Palestinians had crossed into Israel without permits, and the Israeli women acted illegally by bringing them in. They describe themselves as ‘women who disobey’ and their aim is to challenge the norm of occupation.

This lunch party, and similar ones like it, are coming increasingly under the scrutiny of Israeli police who questioned one of the women for an hour. But these women are ready, they say they will go to jail for the right to be women who lunch together.
