Summary of a story from People’s Daily Online, 11.2.11

The Methodist Church of Fiji condemned the recent increase in sexual violence against women in a statement this morning.

“We condemn such things to be happening in our Fiji because we believe a better crime-free Fiji is possible,” said the church’s assistant secretary general, Reverend Tevita Nawadra.

Though talking about sex has long been taboo in Fiji, Nawadra said this is changing and he hopes it will lead to a decrease in violence.

The announcement came after the police recorded 100 accounts of sexual violence in the first six weeks of 2011 alone. There is also a growing worry about the rape of teenage girls aged 13 to 15.

Fiji’s Police Commissioner Brigadier Loane Naivalurua recently directed police across the country to prioritizie bringing down the crime rate – all rape or attempted rape cases are to be solved within 48 hours.
