One veteran Afghan elder and her 200 fighters
Summary from The Guardian, 17.02.11
In south Afghanistan most women barely leave the house, but community elder, Hajiyani Abeda, does.
She stands with US commander, General Petraeus, in the push for local people to defend themselves against the Taliban.
Last week Hajiyani Abeda attended a meeting of the Interim Security Critical Infrastructure programme (ISCI), held in Marjah, in Afghanistan’s Helmland province.
With her face uncovered, she sat herself in a prominent place next to the district governor.
She served as a resistance commander during the jihad against Soviet Union in the 1980s. She had more than 200 men under her. “And they still follow me today,” she said.
