Priests: new mass missal is sexist

Summary of story from the Irish Times and the Irish Examiner, 04.02.11.

Women will be “rightly enraged at the deliberate use of non-inclusive language” in the new missal for use in Mass from the end of this year, the Association of Catholic Priests has said.

Throughout, the missal only refers to “man”, “men” and “he”.

“The association is gravely concerned that this literal translation from Latin has produced texts that are archaic, elitist and obscure,” according to a statement from the association.

Priests now warn that the old-fashioned liturgy could drive away thousands of young Catholic mass -goers.

“This new translation perpetuates an exclusivist, sexist language,” said Monsignor Dermot Lane, president of the Mater Dei Institute of Education, ”It is utterly inexcusable.”
