We don’t normally cover fashion much in Women’s Views on News, but when it comes to women’s cycling attire I reckon we have an excuse.

Bicycles have a long association with entrepreneurial women. Since the day Annie “Londonderry” Kopchovsky shocked 19th Century America by ditching the skirt and cycling around the world in men’s-style pantaloons, the humble bike has been a symbol of women’s progress towards equality.

Now a Cambridge based teacher, Sally Guyer has continued this tradition by starting a range of raincoats specifically designed to tackle the practical issues of staying dry on an upright bike – without resorting to a dayglo anorak and trouser combo.

Taking the view that “no special attire is needed to be a commuter cyclist – until it rains”, Guyer had got wet once too often on her trips to work. Yet she found no waterproofs on the women’s market which were both practical and fitted the ‘cycle chic’ category.

British Cycling say there are three times more male cyclists than female, so if this helps get more women on the roads, then I wish her well. After this hopefully she’ll work on getting the men out those unflattering lycra numbers…
