Gang rape victim to appeal over men’s acquittal
Summary from Dawn.com, April 28, 2011
A campaigner and victim of a gang rape says she will continue to fight for justice despite the release of 14 men from jail last week who had been arrested for the crime.
Mukhtar Mai of Pakistan says she will ask for a judicial review of their acquittal. As WVoN reported last week, all but one of the men who allegedly raped her were released.
She says she now fears for her life having been a vocal campaigner for women’s rights while the men were in prison. She could also face prosecution from the men on a charge of falsely implicating them.
The acquittal has caused angry reaction from human rights campaigners.
