The Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution in Kenya is considering a revolutionary move.

To make the provision of sanitary towels to girls – along with books – a fundamental right so that they can pursue their education uninterrupted.

Commission chairman Charles Nyachae said the new constitution aims to help women excel in society and addresses the issues that may make them lose their self-esteem.

“We are currently engaging in debate to strengthen some of the issues in the constitution before it is implemented,” Mr Nyachae said during a launch to distribute sanitary towels to girls at St Mary’s Nyamiramba Secondary School in Nyakach.

He said the lack of sanitary towels for girls at puberty was derailing their performance and undermining their legal right to education.

He urged parents to discuss issues pertaining to adolescence early enough with their daughters to prevent them from losing their self-esteem and confidence with the onset of menstruation.
