US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Chinese State Councillor Liu Yandong met in Washington to announce the launch of the China-US Women’s Leadership Exchange and Dialogue (Women-LEAD).

The initiative was launched as the two countries concluded their second annual Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE).

Through Women-LEAD, China and the US aim to improve communication and dialogue between high-level Chinese and American women leaders, and develop relationships between organisations, think tanks and universities on gender equality.

It will also provide support for programs for emerging women leaders and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise on women’s leadership and development across all sectors, including entrepreneurship, science and technology.

Facilitating public-private partnerships for women’s empowerment programs will be a key element for achieving the objectives, according to a press release issued by the US State Department.

A number of exchange programmes will be carried out under the Women-LEAD banner.

This will include a Chinese delegation of senior-level women leaders visiting the United States for a dialogue with their American counterparts, and vice versa.

Women-LEAD will be jointly led by the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues and the All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF).

China and the United States launched CPE in May 2010 in Beijing.

The aim is to enhance and strengthen ties between their citizens in the areas of women’s issues, education, culture, sports, and science and technology.
