Uganda’s new cabinet includes eight women, an increase of five on the outgoing one.

The women chosen by President Museveni have been welcomed for their qualifications and experience by writer Barnabas Taremwa in the New Vision and the Daily Monitor.

‘Considering that some of Uganda’s past governance problems have largely been orchestrated by men, I want to think that more women on the steering wheel will mean fewer scandals, less corruption, more compassion and a true service for the country’ he says.

Each of the women appointed, Taremwa adds, is highly skilled and experienced. Finance minister Maria Kiwanuka, for example, is ‘not only an accomplished economist, but a successful entrepreneur.’

This year has also seen Uganda appoint its first female Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, and a female head of the new Kampala Capital City Authority, Jennifer Musisi Kiwanuka.
