Fifth patient dies in Stockport hospital saline ‘sabotage’ probe

UK police have been given more time to question the nurse being held over the saline sabotage investigation at Stepping Hill hospital in the Manchester area after officers revealed the inquiry is now looking at the deaths of five patients.

Hospital nurse, treatment Rebecca Leighton, 27, was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of murder and remains in custody (see WVoN story). Police have been given until 9.05 pm on Friday evening to question her.

Officers earlier revealed that the deaths of two more patients are being investigated as part of the inquiry into contamination of saline solution at Stepping Hill hospital in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

An 83 year-old man, named as Alfred Derek Weaver from Stockport, died at the hospital, and police said the death of an 84 year-old woman who died on July 14 is now also being examined.
