American woman arrested over alleged ammunition find
Summary of story from CNN, August 4, 2011
An American woman was arrested earlier this week for allegedly attempting to smuggle 3,500 rounds of ammunition from El Paso, Texas to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
The woman – identified as Gwendolyn Marrufo Sanchez – was arrested by the Mexican military at a checkpoint on the Lerdo International Bridge.
According to a news release from the Chihuahua state attorney general’s office, the woman was travelling on a bus with other passengers coming from El Paso when Mexican military searched the vehicle.
Ammunition rounds were concealed in cans of food and clothes in the woman’s possession, say officials.
During the inspection of the bus, soldiers became suspicious of the items because of their weight. Inside the containers (according to the release) they found a total of 130 boxes of high-powered ammunition.
