Summary of story from BBC News, August 10, 2011

Judy Moran, Australian gangland matriarch, has been sentenced to 26 years in jail for the murder of her brother-in-law.

Moran, 66, head of the notorious criminal family the ‘Carlton Crew’, was convicted in March for her role in killing Des “Tuppence” Moran, who was shot dead in June 2009.

She was found to have driven the getaway car to the cafe where Mr Moran was shot, despite her appearance at court in an electric wheelchair and her assertion that she was at the grave of her dead son when the attack happened.

Ms Moran has had two previous husbands and two sons murdered in gangland killings.

She is one of Australia’s most infamous figures and her trial attracted attention from all over the world. However, she appeared shocked at the lengthy sentence and maintains her innocence.

Judge Lex Lasry said Moran’s crime was “appalling”.

“This was a deliberate and brutal killing. There is of course no sign of remorse on your part,” he said.
