Summary of story from Manchester Evening News, August 24, 2011

A consultant at a Manchester abortion clinic has been cleared – for the second time – of using the hands of a sedated woman to perform a sex act on himself.

Dr Narendra Sharma was cleared by a criminal court two years ago but this week faced an inquiry by the General Medical Council (GMC).

It had been alleged that health workers at the Marie Stopes International Clinic at Fallowfield had seen Dr Sharma taking hold of patients hands and exposing himself in the operating theatre.

But a panel at the GMC, the independent regulator for doctors in the UK, ruled that seven allegations against Dr Sharma could not be proved.

He had been previously been cleared by a jury of three charges made in August 2008, at Manchester Crown Court.

Dr Sharma told the panel he had ill-fitting trousers which he had taped up, and the tape had come undone when a patient kicked out, causing the trousers to partially fall.
