Eight men, all from the Mennonite colony in Manitoba, Bolivia, are currently in court accused of raping around 130 women and girls between 2005 and 2009.

Peter Weiber, 48, is accused of transforming a chemical used for anesthetizing cows into a spray for use on humans.

The men sprayed the chemical into the homes of sleeping families and raped the females.

The victims range from 8  to 60 years-old, and courts have carried out medical examinations on a three year-old, which revealed she had a broken hymen.

The men appear remorseless in court, often falling asleep and have been reprimanded by a judge for laughing and making faces during proceedings.

According to the Die Mennonitische Post, published in Canada but with wide circulation among Bolivian Mennonites, there is a culture of denial within the colonies.

The Mennonite Bishop Johan Neudorf denied anything inherent within the colony culture led to the rapes. He could not explain why it took the community so long to investigate the rumours.

The men were finally caught after a woman caught two of them entering her home.

As they began to rat on their accomplices, enraged husbands, fathers and brothers locked the accused in sheds and basements before the leadership turned them over to the police.
