Girls should say ‘No’ to texting

Summary of story from The Huffington Post, August 16, 2011

Psychotherapist Fran Lasker wants to encourage girls to give up texting as a way of communicating in relationships.

She says that while boys are suited to the monosyllabic nature of the text, girls’ superior verbal skills are stunted by the format.

And that when forming relationships, humans need connection which can only be gained through face to face contact or hearing a voice.

With the increasing use of texting and other short forms of communication, women are, she says, becoming less used to talking both on the telephone and in person, difficulties made worse through the use of abbreviations and emoticons.

If girls do not reclaim their status as the premier communicators, intimate relationships will suffer.

Girls should be proud of their use of language and should demand more verbal contact from the boys with whom they wish to communicate and they should, she says, say No to texting.
