Peru: A League of their own tells the story of Juana, an indigenous peasant, who organised the first football team for women in her community in the Andes.

The team made a pathway for women in community politics and has allowed women to participate and discuss rather their previously passive role.

Meetings after matches became popular assemblies where women discussed the problems that faced their community. Chiefly, climate change which has caused floods that have ruined crops and rendered land obsolete.

Droughts and floods now threaten lives and destroy livelihoods.

The film follows women to the political heart of their country where sixty per cent live in extreme poverty.

Thanks to football Juana has approached politicians regularly, a role previously reserved for women. Similar groups have been forming across the region and allowed women to break their traditional silence.
