An Indian university named after famous revolutionary and devout follower of Gandhi, Potti Sreeramulu, this week opened a Women’s Studies Centre to support and broaden awareness of gender equality and women’s rights.

The department, inaugurated on Thursday, has been in the making for over 10 years, although university resources and capacity are being stretched to allow its creation.

Professor C. Mrunalini will be leading the new Centre, in addition to her existing position as Director of Comparative Studies.

Given the financial restriction, initial work will be confined to seminars and workshops, with plans to offer short and long term courses in the future.

“The contribution of men to society is something that is very well documented but when it comes to women’s contribution, it is almost non-existent,” said Professor Mrunalini. “Over here we will try to give the world view through a woman’s perspective.”
