Shrien Dewani extradition to South Africa to go ahead
Summary of story from The Guardian, August 10, 2011
Briton Shrien Dewani can be extradited to South Africa to face trial for organising the murder of his wife Anni on their honeymoon last year, a district court judge ruled today (see WVoN coverage).
Judge Howard Riddle rejected arguments that Dewani was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and was too unwell to be extradited.
Dewani had also claimed that to face the harsh conditions in South African jails would violate his human rights.
Dewani, who has been held in a psychiatric hospital in Bristol, was considered by doctors to be ‘too ill’ to appear in court to hear the ruling.
South African authorities claim to have evidence that he ordered the carjacking and shooting of his wife, Anni, found dead in the back of a taxi driven by alleged co-conspirator Zola Tongi.
A new witness has suggested that Dewani married to avoid being ‘disowned’ by his family, the first time a possible motive has been put forward.
It is not yet know when the extradition will take place.
